I'm Kolu Westcott,
the artist behind Portraits NW.

I have always been interested in the way we choose to remember the people and animals who matter to us. Portraiture became the way I could turn what I love into something tangible: artwork made for the home, not photographs that disappear into a phone.

My approach is personal and considered. I take the time to understand who you are, what matters to you, and how you want your artwork to feel in your home. From choosing the location and planning what to wear to designing the finished piece, every part of the experience is considered.

THE PERSON BEHIND THE PORTRAITS

Outside the studio, you’ll usually find me with my horse or loving on my retired greyhounds.

I’m an endurance rider and spend much of my time with my BLM mustang, who was once wild. We ride, camp, explore the Pacific Northwest, and spend plenty of time figuring things out together out on the trail. My greyhounds came to me from Ireland, and these days, they’re happily enjoying retirement, long naps, chasing squirrels, and being thoroughly spoiled.

Living with animals has taught me to pay attention to the things that aren’t always obvious. Animals communicate through the smallest changes in posture, expression, and movement. You learn to notice when they’re curious, uncertain, relaxed, or asking for space. You learn to listen before you ask for anything more.

That experience shapes the way I create portraits. Photographing a horse, or any animal, isn’t simply about knowing where to stand with a camera. It’s about understanding the animal in front of you, reading their subtle cues, and knowing when to step in, when to wait, and when to simply let them be.

Portraits are meant to be lived with.

I believe photographs deserve better than a place on a hard drive.

The portraits I create are designed from the beginning as finished artwork. We consider where a piece will live, how large it should be, and what will work with the space you already love.

The goal isn't to give you hundreds of images to sort through. It's to create a small collection of artwork that still feels right years from now.
